Climate for Hospital
In Italy, the integration between climate protection and the health system is undergoing a profound evolution through new national plans, ministerial directives and roadmaps for decarbonization. The health sector, responsible for about 5% of global CO₂ emissions, is reorganizing itself to become more sustainable and protect hospitals and vulnerable patients from the effects of global warming. The main and most recent proposals and initiatives are structured on three strategic levels: 1. The roadmap for the climate neutrality of the National Health Service. Institutions and experts (including the Association of Doctors for the Environment – ISDE Italy) have presented a formal roadmap to eliminate the ecological impact of public hospitals, aiming to reduce the direct and energy emissions of public hospitals by 80% by 2040 and to achieve total climate neutrality along the entire National Health Service (NHS) supply chain by 2046. 2. The New National Prevention Plan (PNP): The Ministry of Health has published the guidelines for the new National Prevention Plan, introducing important innovations related to climate risks. For the first time, “environmental and climate prevention” becomes a mandatory program for all Italian regions. 3. Hospital resilience and “Operational plans for heat waves”: following the recent extreme heat waves in Europe and the new WHO guidelines, the Ministry of Health has updated its guidelines for heat wave preparedness, creating a resilient hospital infrastructure. An example is the modernization of healthcare facilities with the installation of heat exchangers and new air conditioning systems for critical areas (such as intensive care). A real Italian network of hospitals for sustainability is also being developed, aimed at sharing best practices in energy saving and resource management.
