The transition from Lean Manufacturing (industry) to Lean Construction (construction) in Italy implies the adaptation of a serial and repetitive production system to a unique, dynamic and highly fragmented building context. The main challenges lie in organizational culture, supply chain management and technological adaptation. Structural and management challenges from the assembly line to the single construction site where Lean Manufacturing operates in stable environments. Perhaps, Lean Construction has to deal with the variability of weather conditions, terrain and the constant movement of work teams with a strong fragmentation of the supply chain: in Italy, the construction sector relies heavily on subcontractors and SMEs. Synchronizing the principles of Just-in-Time (JIT) requires the alignment of multiple independent companies that have historically worked in isolation. Are we starting to face the resistance to change and traditional culture where a strong cultural inertia is rooted in Italian construction companies? Can we break with the traditional paradigm of “it’s always been done this way” and promoting a culture of continuous improvement requires overcoming strong egos and mistrust?
