New materials and fuels for safer construction
Modern construction uses new and advanced materials and alternative fuels to make buildings safer, more durable and more environmentally friendly. Among the new materials that improve safety in construction is “self-diagnostic” concrete, which integrates carbon nanotubes to become conductive and report any structural problems or internal damage in real time. Then there is reinforced wood, which combines the flexibility and sustainability of wood with an internal metal skeleton, ensuring a superior seismic response compared to traditional wood. Or graphene, which, when added to standard mixtures, exponentially increases the mechanical strength and durability of materials. Finally, hemp fibers and fireproof materials offer exceptional resistance combined with the natural ability to prevent the spread of fire. If these materials are combined with alternative fuels in production processes, such as so-called SSF (Solid Secondary Fuels), cement kilns can replace petroleum-derived fuels, while reducing emissions. A significant challenge for the improvement of the sector.
