Scale, prefabrication, supply chain and DfMA: the drivers of construction efficiency
What is DfMA? DfMA’s Planning for Manufacturing and Assembly (PMA) is an engineering methodology designed to optimize the efficiency of the manufacturing process by providing planning, cost, and scheduling for the entire process. This method is based on the fundamental principle of simplicity in the production of components and efficiency in assembly to obtain the final configuration. To achieve these goals, these needs must be considered from the earliest stages of design. Previously, DfMA was divided into two distinct methodologies: Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA). DFM focused on selecting cost-effective processes, materials, and manufacturing techniques and streamlining manufacturing processes during the design phase, which was the most appropriate time to address any issues with minimal cost impact. DFA, on the other hand, focused on reducing assembly time, cost and complexity by optimizing the number of components and assembly steps and minimizing variations in production quality. Is it possible to combine them?
