The energy impact of Data Centers: challenges and solutions
Legislative Decree 48/2020 effectively introduces the requirement to install building automation and control systems (BACS) in all non-residential buildings with heating systems with a rated output exceeding 290 kW; this effectively implements what the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive has long stipulated, namely that this requirement must apply to all buildings and not just to new ones or those undergoing major first-level refurbishments. This is also achieved through the introduction and future requirement to calculate the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI), from the second half of 2027, for non-residential buildings with heating systems with a capacity exceeding 290 kW, effectively promoting a systematic process of continuous improvement with the advantages of ease of installation and a rapid return on investment. BACS – Building Automation and Control Systems BACS are building automation and control systems that enable the integrated and automated management of technical systems (heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting, domestic hot water and solar shading). Their classification is defined by the UNI EN ISO 52120-1 standard, which identifies four energy efficiency classes (D, C, B, A). The new 2025 Minimum Requirements Decree mandates that certain non-residential buildings must adopt BACS systems of at least class B, capable of ensuring coordinated and centralised control of the systems.
